President's Message
It is my great honour to serve as the President of your Canadian Academy of Engineering for 2011/2012. The Academy, founded in 1987, is comprised of highly accomplished engineers and is dedicated to serving the interests of society in matters related to engineering. This includes supporting sustainable stewardship of natural resources and the environment, public safety, reliable infrastructure, leading-edge research and development, and a well-functioning economy based on advanced technology. At the Annual General Meeting of Academy in Vancouver in June 2011, we were privileged to induct 45 new Fellows into the Academy. All of the new Fellows have laudable credentials and have contributed to Canada in significant ways. Welcome to all of the new Fellows and we look forward to your participation in the many activities that we have underway at the Academy this year. The members of the Academy are our most valuable assets. As we contribute to building knowledge with our partners, the involvement of our members is absolutely vital. To that end, a key focus of our activities this year will be to engage our members in Academy activities across the country, across industries and across business, government and academia. We all have an important role to play and we all have demonstrated the energy and commitment to our future in our selection as Fellows. In executing our mission, the Academy works in close collaboration with other academies in Canada and abroad, most notably the members of the Council of Canadian Academies and the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS). We have close relations with Engineers Canada and the other members of Canadian Engineering Leadership Forum (CELF). Energy continues to be a key theme for the Academy, through our increasing involvement as a partner in the Trottier Energy Futures Project and the Energy Pathways Project. Over this year we will be looking to diversify our work into at least one additional project area. Please share with us your thoughts on the Academy’s current activities and on potential future initiatives. The Academy website is our key communication link with our Fellows and with the public. This website contains recent news about the Academy, including summaries of past Annual General Meetings, reports and useful links to related sites of interest. Members have access to information on Academy operations and the members’ directory. Comments and suggestions for improvement are most welcome. Thanks to all of you who contribute so much to the Academy. We have much to be proud of as we head into our 25th Anniversary year. P. Kim Sturgess, FCAE, P.Eng.
