Lifelong Learning for Professional Engineers

2 -- The Rationale for Lifelong Learning


The driving forces for lifelong learning are diverse and span from the needs of individual engineers to the competitiveness of the national economy. The purposes of lifelong learning include:

  • Individually, to remain competent and competitive throughout one's career, and to achieve personal satisfaction and job fulfillment.

  • Individually, to maximize one's contribution to one's employer and to society.

  • Corporately, to maintain a competitive advantage through excellence of people.

  • Nationally, to remain competitive in a world moving toward free trade and experiencing rapidly changing technology.

  • Professionally, to enhance the stature of the profession of engineering so that there will be continued confidence by the public in the judgment and ethics of professional engineers.

  • Societally, to protect the safety of the public and to ensure sustainability of the environment.
